"Word Bank Journal" by TeacherMom  Tuesday, June 24, 2008

The Word Bank Journal is a wonderful writing resource to encourage those ESL students or struggling readers/writers to put their ideas down on paper. I have used this book with struggling readers and reluctant writers. My students who normally do not write sentences because they are frustrated by spelling unknown words or lack the vocabulary to express their ideas, used the available words listed with the writing prompt to write sentences to complete or answer the provided story starters. The students felt confident enough to write sentences and phrases using the words in the word bank. And, they didn’t hesitate to ask me how to spell other needed words. This book is a great motivator to bridge the gap between reluctant writers’ hesitations to write and their abilities to express themselves through written texts.
