Overview - PCI READING PROG LVL 1 CURRICULUM SET
The PCI Reading Program is a scientifically research-based curriculum created specifically to teach students with developmental disabilities, autism, and significant learning disabilities to read. The reading program now comes in convenient, discounted Curriculum Sets with all the tools to turn nonreaders into successful readers.
PCI Reading Programs Print
Both print programs follow a five-step lesson cycle based on visual discrimination and is designed to teach students to automatically recognize and correctly pronounce one word at a time. In Level One as each new word is learned, previous words are continually reviewed, which promotes both short- and long-term retention. The program is designed for nonreaders age 5 to adult, the activities and books feature realistic illustrations, and the story lines encompass important life skills and lessons. Level Two teaches additional sight words and "real-world" nouns and verbs, advancing students from a 1.0 reading level to a 2.0-2.5 reading level. While Level Two's focus is still on teaching words through visual discrimination, it also introduces students to wrapped text, common inflectional endings, such as -s, -ing, and -ed, and compound words.
PCI Reading Programs Software
The Level One and Level Two software programs are a computer presentation of the print programs and are accessible for students who are single-switch and scan, touch screen, or mouse users. The interactive lessons feature errorless teaching. Incorrect answers are removed from the screen, and the student is prompted to make another selection. The software maintains the content and approach from the print version, and can be used alone or in conjunction with the print materials. Level One features a simple user interface with a dude ranch theme. Activities at the PCI Ranch include horseback riding, cow roping, campfires, hayrides, and more. The activities and lessons in Level Two reflect an ocean resort theme. The reward activities include body boarding, riding a watercraft, fishing, whale watching, and more. Both software programs include a teenage Reading Buddy to help guide the student through the activities, offering assistance and encouragement.
Audio Cards
The words in Level One and Level Two help students build fluency as they practice hearing and reading the words. Each level contains 140 cards. Used with a Califone CardMaster, the audio cards provide teachers with a hands-on auditory and visual practice center that can be used independently.
Reproducible Books
The 28 Level One books and the 14 Level Two books are now available in reproducible format. The reproducible books are identical to the program books, except they are in black and white. Use the books in the classroom or as reading reinforcement activities to send home.
Comprehension Activities Binders
Extend and assess comprehension on the program's books with these fully scripted lessons and reproducible activities. For each book in the core program, these binders provide a reading comprehension lesson with activities for both pre- and post-reading. Comprehension lessons focus on standards-based literacy skills and strategies. Offers post-reading comprehension questions for each page in the books that reinforce these skills and strategies. Four reproducible activities are provided for each book along with a reproducible assessment. Progress monitoring checklists are included.
