Overview - READING SKILLS FOR LIFE STD TXT LEVEL B

High-interest stories and lessons in the Reading Skills for Life workbooks motivate struggling readers from PreK to Grade 6. The unique series has flexible, independent levels that can be matched to students' skills and will help students learn long-term reading skills. From prereading through reading fluency, the well-organized, two-color consumable workbooks provide exercises, word study skills, and reading strategies.

Lesson-extending reinforcement follows each engaging story to support critical skills and encourage new readers. Students learn phonics and word attack strategies in the focused, comprehensive approach to reading instruction in:

Phonemic awareness, including recognizing phonemes and rhymes and developing the ability to segment, blend, isolate, match, and manipulate sounds.
Systemic and explicit instruction in phonics, with sequential instruction beginning with Level A and reinforcing skills all the way through Level E.
Phonograms, teaching high-utility phonograms and word families.
High-frequency words, sequentially introducing 1,000 commonly used words at the appropriate level of the program.
Word recognition strategies, including practicing a five-step strategy for learning new words-hear, see, read, say, and write.
Structural analysis, providing instruction in inflected endings, prefixes, suffixes, and certain kinds of structures, such as compound words.

Reading Skills for Life progress developmentally. New reading skills are introduced and practiced one at a time. As a result, students advance to a grade 6.0 reading level, paving the way for them to enter mainstream course study.

The reading levels are constructed as follows:
• Level P - nonreaders and beginning readers
• Level A - 1.5 to 2.0 reading level
• Level B - 2.0 to 2.5 reading level
• Level C - 2.5 to 3.0 reading level
• Level D - 3.0 to 4.0 reading level
• Level E - 4.0 to 6.0 reading level

Each level is independent, so instructors can enter the series at the level that best meets students' needs. Core curriculum areas, including social studies, science, and literature, are seamlessly integrated throughout the program. Students also learn life skills related to careers, home, and family.

Teacher's Guide
Teachers benefit with strategies, reinforcement, and more at each level of Reading Skills for Life with a corresponding annotated guide filled with supplemental features. The 160-page guides include reciprocal teaching strategies that model critical skills and lessons that students need. The guides also include activities that address a variety of learning styles, plus common errors to watch for.
