Overview - PCI READING PROGRAM LEVEL 3 PRINT & SOFTWARE
PCI Reading Program Level Three Print is designed to move students toward reading independence by using the words taught in Levels One and Two as exemplars for teaching 23 onsets and 20 word families. Students learn the basics of word analysis, word building, and decoding in a uniquely scaffolded introduction to phonics that expands the success-based, controlled-vocabulary approach from Levels One and Two. In addition, Level Three introduces students to the new genres of nonfiction and poetry and seamlessly integrates comprehension, writing, and fluency skills into the lesson cycle.
A Unique Approach to Phonics
Level Three serves as a bridge between the whole-word visual discrimination approach in Levels One and Two and the decoding required of independent readers. To promote student success, instruction is carefully scaffolded to introduce students to the process of decoding by unveiling sounds that are embedded within the sight words they already know how to read. Students learn to examine known sight words, recognize common onsets and rimes, match phoneme sounds to letters, and decode unfamiliar words such as "bat" and "rake."
Integrated Comprehension, Fluency, and Writing Instruction
In Level Three, students mature as both readers and writers, learning and applying higher-order comprehension skills as well as practicing fluency and writing. Comprehension skills, including setting, main idea, and cause and effect, were selected based on an analysis of the types of questions on alternative state assessments. Unit tests include both decoding and comprehension questions, allowing teachers to monitor all aspects of reading progress. Writing opportunities are provided through the Write and Read Workbook, and fluency activities and assessments are integrated into each unit.
PCI Reading Program Level Three Software is an online addition to the award-winning PCI Reading Program Print series. Students discover a whole world of fun virtual games to help them master decoding. Level Three Software covers the same 23 onsets and 20 rimes presented in Level Three Print and focuses on building phonemic awareness and phonics skills. Level Three Software is subscription-based on an annual per-teacher license.
Extensive Word-Decoding Practice
Designed to support and enhance the basic word-decoding skills taught in Level Three Print, the software follows the same lesson pedagogy but presents the skills in a different format to promote generalization. The software leads students through a series of games that teach letter-sound correspondences. Using the visual metaphor of building, students then separate known sight words into onsets and rimes and use the word parts to construct new words. Level Three Software is focused on supporting students in learning the difficult skill of blending. Narration guides students throughout the experience, pronouncing the various onsets, rimes, and words, and offering praise and encouragement.
Modified Writing Opportunities
For many students with cognitive disabilities, writing is a challenging task. For these students, Level Three Software includes modified writing opportunities not available in the print edition.
Actionable Assessment
Level Three Software delivers assessments for prescriptive placement, progress monitoring, and skills mastery. These allow the teacher to individualize instruction for each student and document achievement.
Accessibility Features and Modifications
Several feature sets are included in Level Three Software to enhance accessibility. These include single-switch and scan options; instructional leveling so teachers can move forward and back in the curriculum for reteach/review; and progressive audio and visual re-prompting to beckon a response from the student.
