Overview - FLORIDA STATE BOOK
The 19-unit PCI Early Childhood Curriculum
, developed by kindergarten teacher Brenda Burdine Thornton, includes a full year of active learning ideas and reproducible activities. Based upon the concept that curriculum should be designed to 'fit the child,' the program is comprised of thematic units that integrate basic skills with extension activities for students of all levels. This organizational teaching tool provides more time for instruction because less time is spent on preparation.
Each unit is centered around a one- or two-week theme that incorporates important beginning reading, writing, math, science, and social studies skills. Objectives, preparation tips, daily lesson plans, learning center ideas, patterns for "hands-on" games, and hundreds of reproducible paper-pencil activities are included in each book.
How the Curriculum Works
The program offers a structured daily routine that both new and experienced early childhood and kindergarten teachers will find easy to implement. Students learn to manage their own time, as they move from whole-class discussion to small-group lessons to independent practice.
Large Group Discussion
At the beginning of each day, the teacher reads a recommended story related to the theme, which is followed by a lesson. Next, students participate in an interactive discussion.
Students work at their own pace to complete simple paper-pencil, coloring, manipulative, and cut-and-paste assignments.
The teacher meets with various groups of 4-5 children to reinforce that day's lesson and basic academic skills.
'Hands-on' game ideas in each unit develop skills in three areas: language, math, and visual and fine motor. Children are encouraged to earn one ticket in each area per day before they explore the learning centers.
Twelve learning centers are described in the curriculum. Lists of general and unit-specific materials for each center are included in each book.
The entire class gathers to review the day's lesson.
This comprehensive program can be purchased as a complete 19-unit curriculum, or individual unit books can be ordered separately.

State Book (selected states)
To complement the 19 thematic units in the PCI Early Childhood Curriculum, state books are currently being developed. Each state book contains two weeks of structured lessons that teach young children basic information about their state. Objectives, preparation tips, lesson plans, patterns for "hands-on" games, and reproducible activities are included in each state book.
STATE BOOK ACTIVITIES
Each state book has illustrated activities on the state's capitol, flag, tree, gem, flower, bird, fruit, vegetable, beverage, insect, fish, and animal. Students learn to locate their state on a U.S. map, identify their state's flag, and locate their town on a state map.
