This four-volume series, available individually or as a set, is designed to prepare students to function as independently as possible in an integrated society. Each volume provides scores of instructional strategies that facilitate the functional performance of children and youth with disabilities in a variety of life situations. The functional approach to teaching requires an instructional method that emphasizes the application of knowledge and skills in reality contexts. Life-skill topics addressed include: self-care, motor skills, household management, nonverbal and oral communication, functional academics, interpersonal, competitive job-findings, and leisure-time skills.

Each volume comes with general goals, an introduction to the curriculum, and specific objectives for suggested activities, which are now separated into new categories: Teacher Intervention and Family Intervention. Further, these new editions now include four distinctive age-appropriate levels for all activities: infant and toddler/preschooler, primary, intermediate, and secondary. Educators will find the detailed overview on functional curriculum quite helpful.

Volume 3.
Covers the following units: Functional Reading, Functional Writing, and Functional Math. In this unit, students are taught to recognize personal information on written materials, set clocks and identify time from numerals and markings, assemble items using a graph, write simple notes, and acquire basic arithmetic skills that facilitate independence. One sample activity teaches the student how to locate foods and other items from supermarket aisle directories. This activity can easily be demonstrated in the classroom with a simulated classroom store (Teacher Intervention). Or parents can provide "real-world" experience by having their child locate foods and items using a grocery list (Family Intervention).

The teaching strategies covered in each book are applicable to all students with varying abilities and ages. All the activities covered are great with individual or small-group settings.
