Overview - READ, THINK AND WRITE ABOUT IT BINDERS 1 & 2

The Read, Think and Write About It  reproducible binders, by Rosie Simms, encourage reluctant readers to read for enjoyment while reinforcing critical comprehension, writing, and vocabulary skills. Each 120-page binder features 10 fiction and 10 nonfiction passages, covering a wide range of topics and written at a second or third grade reading level. Activity sheets follow each passage and use a variety of formats, including multiple choice, fill in the blank, graphs, and charts.

HIGH-INTEREST STORIES
Written to engage struggling readers, passages cover a variety of high-interest, real-world; topics, including famous people, intriguing events, and action-oriented careers. Each low-level passage is between 210 and 320 words and is laid out in two columns for ease of reading. Both fiction and nonfiction passages include simple illustrations to serve as visual cues. Examples of the first binder titles include Pickle Week, a nonfiction passage about a unique ten-day celebration and The Real Dirt About Dirt Bikes, a fiction passage about a character who wants to learn how to ride dirt bikes. The second binder titles include Like a Hawk, a nonfiction passage about the famous skateboarder, Tony Hawk; and Team Player, a fiction passage about community volunteering.

READABILITY LEVELS
The first binder's passages range from a 2.0 to 2.9 level and the second binder's passages range from 3.0 to 3.9. Each binder includes a list of the passages and their individual read ability levels for teacher planning.

VARIED ACTIVITIES
Five activity sheets are paired with each passage. One activity covers vocabulary skills, such as context clues, synonyms, and antonyms. Three activities cover comprehension, including main idea and details, making predictions, sequencing, or story elements. Venn diagrams, T-Charts, and other graphic organizers are also included. The fifth activity covers writing skills such as letters, articles, e-mail messages, or advertisements."Stretch Your Thinking" prompts are scattered throughout the activities to provide practice in higher order and critical thinking skills.

"Amazing for English Language Learners" by MissKim2003  Sunday, May 31, 2009

This is a great program to use with English Language Learners. I use one reading excerpt each week. I get to incorporate oral language development with my student. In addition, there are consistent opportunities for vocabulary building, reading comprehension and writing

Advantages

Reading levels are labeled for each passage. Checking for understanding and graphic organizers to help students with writing is consistently used throughout the binders.
