Overview - PCI READING PROGRAM LEVEL 1, 2 & 3 PRINT & SOFTWARE
The PCI Reading Programs are a research-based curriculum created specifically to teach students with developmental disabilities, autism, and significant learning disabilities how to read. Levels One and Two teach 280 sight words and "real-world" nouns and verbs through a comprehensive system of repetition, "hands-on" practice, controlled-vocabulary reading, and high-interest activities. Level Three is designed to move students toward reading independence by using the words taught in Levels One and Two as exemplars for teaching 23 onsets and 20 word families. Students learn the basics of word analysis, word building, and decoding in a uniquely scaffolded introduction to phonics that expands the success-based, controlled-vocabulary approach from Levels One and Two. In addition, Level Three introduces students to the new genres of nonfiction and poetry and seamlessly integrates comprehension, writing, and fluency skills into the lesson cycle.
Nonreaders become successful readers word by word, reading 62 engaging, full-color books along the way. The software includes all the lessons and activities in the print PCI Reading Programs and can be used alone or in conjunction with the print materials. The software is accessible for students who are single-switch and scan, touch screen, or mouse users.
Level One Print is designed as a one-on-one program and takes at least one full school year to complete. In Level One, students learn 140 of the most basic sight words from the Dolch and Fry lists. Students progress from reading individual words to 8-12 word sentences. Level One includes 28 books, ranging in length from 8 to 12 pages. By the end of Level One, nonreaders will have progressed to approximately a 1.0 reading level.
Level One Software follows the lesson cycle of the print program and includes lessons for all the print components. Students who are familiar with the print program will recognize the books and activities, such as Word Building Lessons, Trace and Read, Guided Word Practice, and Building Reading Skills. Teachers can monitor class progress or individual student assessment information in the Student Records area, as well as enter scores and notes for Level One Print activities that are completed away from the computer.
Level Two Print is designed as the next step for students who have completed Level One. It teaches 140 additional sight words and "real-world" nouns and verbs, advancing students from a 1.0 reading level to a 2.0-2.5 reading level. While Level Two's focus is still on teaching words through visual discrimination, it also introduces students to wrapped text, common inflectional endings, such as -s, -ing, and -ed, and compound words.
Level Two Software follows the lesson cycle of the print program and automatically advances the student to the next appropriate activity. After completing all the activities for one word and after each Posttest, students are given access to the library, which is a place where they can make independent choices to view the certificates they have earned, monitor the growth of their Word Wall as they advance through the program, select books to read, or play a word-matching game.
Level Three Print is designed to move students toward reading independence by using the words taught in Levels One and Two as exemplars for teaching 23 onsets and 20 word families.
Level Three Software is designed to support and enhance the basic word-decoding skills taught in Level Three Print. The software follows the same lesson pedagogy but presents the skills in a different format to promote generalization. The software leads students through a series of games that teach letter-sound correspondences. Using the visual metaphor of building, students then separate known sight words into onsets and rimes and use the word parts to construct new words. Level Three Software is focused on supporting students in learning the difficult skill of blending. Narration guides students throughout the experience, pronouncing the various onsets, rimes, and words, and offering praise and encouragement.
