PCI Education has partnered with News-2-You® to create symbol-supported text for the program’s books and activity sheets. News-2-You®, founded by a speech language pathologist with over 30 years of experience, produces a weekly downloadable current events newspaper. News-2-You’s® founder, Jacquie Clark, has developed a set of symbols known as SymbolStix® to help nonreaders access text. Used widely across the United States these symbols are familiar to many students with intellectual disabilities.
As News-2-You® states on its website, “Research indicates that picture systems can actually accelerate speech and language acquisition. Symbol sets do have a positive effect on the development of written language because they become the scaffold for expressive communication and cognition. They serve as a bridge between the concrete (pictures) and the abstract (print text).”
