Environmental Print Series,  is a comprehensive, standards-based language arts curriculum for students with significant cognitive disabilities. It was developed for both verbal and nonverbal students by Janie Haugen-McLane, Jill L. Haney, and Elizabeth Stein.

Components of the Environmental Print SeriesFully scripted, the program integrates forms of environmental print such as road signs and indoor signs into the story lines of books about adolescent characters. It includes a wide variety of manipulatives that allow students to demonstrate comprehension and content mastery. The text in books and activity sheets is supported by SymbolStix® from News-2-You®, making the program accessible to nonreaders of all ages.

 



Program Themes

Level One teaches 48 signs, first through the context of a book and then generalized through a poster of a community scene and suggested community-based instruction activities. Each book and poster focuses on three signs in one of four environments:

  • Streets and Roads • Work Places
  • Restaurants • Community Places


Language Arts Standards

Level One lessons focus on teaching and reinforcing the following language arts standards:

  • Concepts of Print • Setting
  • Main Character • Cause and Effect
  • Character Traits • Main Idea

 


Designed for Both Verbal and Nonverbal Students

Many classrooms for students with intellectual disabilities include a mix of students who are verbal and students who are nonverbal. Meeting the receptive and expressive communication needs of all these students can be a challenge. Environmental Print Series has been developed so that all questions asked in the lessons can be answered verbally or nonverbally.

Suggested responses are noted on the scripted lesson plans. The program includes 200 Response Cards to allow students who are nonverbal to indicate a picture answer to many of the questions.

In addition, a Responder Mat is included so that students who are nonverbal can easily indicate “yes,” “no,” or “I don’t know” to all yes/no questions.The Responder Mat has a visual image for each of the three responses and is designed so that students can either touch or gaze at the response they want to indicate.

EP Lesson Plans

Two Lesson Plan Books = 160 Scripted Lessons

  • Every step of the lesson cycle is supported by a scripted lesson plan.
  • Each unit includes ten lesson plans that incorporate all the components of the program in a seamless learning system.
  • All lessons, except the section of Lesson Ten that focuses on assessment, are intended for small-group instruction.
  • Each lesson includes a list of student objectives and materials to gather ahead of time.
  • For every question asked, both verbal and nonverbal responses are suggested.
       

16 Books in Two Differentiated Levels

Level A Book: One line per page. Level A allows students to focus on the main idea of the story.
Level B Book: Two lines per page. Level B tells the same story as Level A but provides students with additional details.

Environmental Print Series includes 16 full-color books about adolescent characters who encounter signs in their everyday lives. All books are provided in two levels.

Level A features one line of text per page and focuses on the main idea of the story.
Level B
features two lines of text per page and provides additional details of the same story presented in Level A. Teachers can use the two levels to differentiate instruction while using the same scripted lessons and manipulatives provided in the program. Based on students’ abilities, teachers can form two small groups, one reading the Level A book and the other reading the Level B book. Comprehension activities for the books are also in two levels.

       

48 Signs

Environmental Print Series teaches students to identify and explain the meaning of 48 signs seen in the community. For each sign, a definition and key bullet points related to the sign’s meaning have been written in easy-to-understand language. Kinesthetic actions to reinforce the definition have been developed so that students  can see, hear, and experience the meaning of each sign.

Student Sign Strips and Student Signs feature Velcro®, allowing students to complete hands-on matching and identification activities. The Student Signs are also used on the posters.

Retell Mat and Sequence Cards

The ability to retell and summarize a story is a critical part of comprehension. Environmental Print Series incorporates this language arts standard through the Retell Mat and Sequence Cards. Using three full-color illustrations from the program’s books, students identify the beginning, middle, and end of the story and sequence the cards on the Retell Mat.

For students with significant intellectual disabilities, the Retell Mat and Sequence Cards also function as a modified writing activity. As students place each picture in sequence, they are essentially “composing” a story.

The Program also includes this retell mat for comprehension checking.

Activity Sheets and School-Home Activities

The program includes 128 reproducible activity sheets that help students demonstrate comprehension of both the books and the signs. Activities include reproducible versions of the retell mat and the poster, comprehension questions for both Level A and Level B books that feature SymbolStix®, matching activities for the signs, and a community-based instruction activity page.

To facilitate communication between the classroom and home, 160 School-Home Activities are provided, one for every lesson in the program.

Each day, teachers send home an activity that families can work on with their children to reinforce the sign or language arts concept featured in that day's lesson.

       

16 Posters

To help students generalize the signs in the program, full-color posters have been included. Each poster features a scene that incorporates the three signs from the unit’s book in a new environment. The scripted lesson guides students to use clues from the poster to affix the Student Signs to the correct places.

Once a unit is completed, the poster for that unit can be placed on the classroom wall and used to review previously learned signs. Lesson Nine of each unit features a review of a previous unit’s poster.

       
Example of Assessments

Assessments

The final step in each unit is to assess students’ short- and long-term retention of the signs and key story elements of the books. A hands-on assessment using the Student Signs and Student Sign Strip is scripted in the lesson plans. Each sign assessment features the three signs from the current unit and three signs from previous units. The Teacher’s Guide features a reproducible Sign Assessment Checklist for documentation and progress monitoring.

Book comprehension questions using multiple choice questions and featuring SymbolStix® allow students who are verbal and nonverbal to demonstrate mastery of such concepts as main character, setting, and main idea. The Teacher’s Guide features a reproducible Book Comprehension Assessment Checklist for documentation and progress monitoring.
